preparing your documentation for acceptance in Vietnam

Documents must first be legalized and validated in order for them to be accepted in Vietnam. Document  authentication and legalization is the procedure used to confirm the legitimacy of Canadian documents so that they may be accepted as official documents abroad. The procedure of document authentication and legalization consists of three steps:

Step 1: Prepare your documents: Before being authenticated and legalized, any documents intended for usage in Vietnam must be notarized by a Notary Public.  All of the aforementioned documents—aside from the Applications for Marriage Registration and the Biography Information Sheet—must be notarized.

Step 2: Authenticating Documents: Documents are sent to Global Affairs Canada in Ottawa to be authenticated. We check your documents to make sure everything is in order. Upon fulfillment, Global Affairs Canada will affix a sizable red stamp, signifying that your documents have undergone authentication.

Step 3 – Legalization of Documents: The last and third step is to send the Vietnamese Embassy your authenticated documents for legalization. The Embassy officials will check that your documents are complete and that they fulfill their standards. Once they are satisfied, they will affix a second stamp right on top of each one, attesting to the legalization of your documents. You can now submit documents to Vietnam with success. Be aware that in addition to legalizing your documents, the Vietnamese Embassy will also translate some of them. For further information, visit the Vietnam Embassy’s webpage on the “How to Marry a Vietnamese Citizen” process.
